The Castle is one of the oldest structures in the district. The tower in the center was built in the 5th century AD, although most of the remainder is Byzantine dating from between the 11th and 14th centuries.

At one time or another, Petrela was the primary defense structure of the region. It has been held, used and conquered by Romans, Greeks, Turks and other.

While Albania is struggling to recovery from a communist pass, it is a fairly safe place to visit. The people are nice and it is definitely an opportunity to visit a country off the beaten path.

Today, there is a restaurant in the castle where you can enjoy the views.
