The town of Elbasan locates in the eastern part of Albania, about 50 km southeast of Tirana. Visitors often pass through the town on the way of the shores of Lake Ohrid.

The castle and its surrounding walls in Elbasan were built in the early Ottoman period. The town itself was also renamed (El Basan means fortress in Turkish) when Sultan Mohammed II rebuilt the walls and the castle. St Mary’s Orthodox Church was built in the mid 19th century.

There is a well preserved Turkish bath from the early 19th century, which is situated outside the walls.
